The laser beam is generated by applying an electric current to carbon dioxide gas between the part and the gas-filled tip. Efficiency is increased by adding nitrogen, helium, and other gases to the carbon dioxide. The metal cutting process performed on various machines using the resulting laser beam is called laser cutting. Special designs, patterned cuts, and precise shapes, which would be difficult and costly to achieve with other cutting methods, can be cut with high precision using lasers.
